Computer Vision Opportunity with Children's National Health System and its spin-off IGI Technologies (a med-tech startup)

We have an immediate full-time opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow/Research Engineer position. The selected candidate will work with a team of technical and clinical researchers based at Children’s National located in Washington, DC and its spin-off IGI Technologies.

The main responsibility of the individual will be to contribute to the ongoing development and commercialization of two surgical navigation systems: a laparoscopic augmented reality (AR) system and a Microsoft HoloLens-based needle guidance system. In the first AR project, we overlay real-time ultrasound image on live laparoscopic video, using hardware-based and computer vision-based tracking. The prototype is currently being evaluated through animal and clinical studies. In the HoloLens AR project, we overlay real-time ultrasound image on the HoloLens field of view using computer vision techniques, and a prototype is being developed.

The ideal candidate will be a recent PhD with extensive experience with image processing and computer vision. Strong programming skills in C/C++, Python, OpenCV, OpenGL and Unity are highly desired. Experience with CAD design, such as using SOLIDWORKS and 3D printing, would be a plus. The responsibilities will be wide-ranging and include technical development and product development, among others. The following are some of the primary responsibilities.

  • Develop image processing and computer vision algorithms to improve image fusion accuracy of our current prototypes.
  • Refine the prototypes to reach a clinical-grade product. This will include software development and hardware design to meet various clinical needs.
  • Miscellaneous other activities: write scientific papers, assist in preparation of grant proposals, participate in preclinical and clinical trials, etc.
