The Ware Lab at the world renowned Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) has an immediate opportunity for a Computational Science Developer. CSHL is ranked first among the leading basic research institutions in the world in molecular biology and genetics and has been home to eight scientists who have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The Ware Lab is located at the beautiful, main campus of CSHL and focuses on genome organization and evolution in plants and building extensive software infrastructure to enable both research activity and community access. We work in a collaborative environment made up of enthusiastic scientists and software engineers, engaged in large-scale, open-science, systems-biology projects such as Gramene and KBase, as well as more focused, experimentally validated research studies. The lab is funded by grants from a number of sources, including the National Science Foundation, the US Department of Energy, and the US Department of Agriculture.

Specific responsibilities

We are seeking a software engineer to work on projects such as the ones listed above and other lab processes and activities. You will become an integral member of a multidisciplinary team that drives the vision of the projects to success. You will collaborate with internal and external partners on several initiatives, from architecting data flows to implementing cool visualizations. Your job duties will include building web-based scientific applications and dynamic interfaces for public project portals using a cutting-edge technology stack. You will demonstrate the design and product of your work in internal meetings and at academic conferences in US and abroad. You will contribute to technical discussions and actively participate in code reviews and peer mentoring.

Additional desired qualities

As a candidate for this position, you are technically flexible and comfortable with rapid prototyping and frequent interaction with individuals at varying levels of technical expertise. You have excellent communication skills and can translate scientific challenges into practical software solutions.

Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher
Skills: Good verbal and written communication skills
Experience: At least two years of hands-on experience in large, complex software development projects.
Experience with:
– git and github
– python/perl
– Javascript
– UNIX command line
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with bioinformatics tools for genome analysis
- Proficiency in JavaScript client-side frameworks such as React or Vue
- Dynamic data visualization with technologies such as D3, SVG and Canvas
- Data mining and statistical analysis in R, Matlab or similar tool
