The PhD project is part of a European project, IMPACT (Intelligence based iMprovement of Personalized treatment And Clinical workflow supporT), which includes academic hospitals and industry from the Netherlands and from several other countries. The overall goal of the consortium is to improve personalised patient treatment as well as clinical workflow, using artificial intelligence methods. The specific project at the UMC Utrecht concerns the analysis of Magnetic Resonance images for diagnosis, treatment selection and treatment monitoring of liver cancer. Choosing the optimal treatment for lesions in the liver is a very difficult decision, because there are numerous types of lesions and many different treatment options. It depends on the type of lesion as well as on the individual patient whether treatment is effective. Better processing of all information is therefore crucial to make the optimal treatment choice and to improve patient outcome. You will work on the development and evaluation of artificial intelligence based methods for personalized treatment selection of liver tumours including image registration, tumour segmentation and classification, in close collaboration with the clinical experts. Furthermore, the PhD project is a collaborative effort between UMC Utrecht and Eindhoven University of Technology (Prof. Josien Pluim and Dr Veronika Cheplygina, www.tue-image.nl). You will therefore spend time at both institutes.
