The Computational Breast Imaging Group (CBIG) at the Center for Biomedical Image Computing and Analytics (CBICA) of the Radiology Department at the University of Pennsylvania has immediate openings for Research Staff positions. CBIG's mission is to act as a translational catalyst between computational science and cancer imaging research. Work in our group focuses on developing innovative image analysis, machine learning and data science methodologies for multimodality imaging, and also on incorporating such methods into clinically relevant applications. Most of our work to date has been on breast imaging, while more recently expanding more broadly in oncologic imaging, including lung and molecular imaging applications. A priority area is integrating imaging with molecular and genomic biomarkers towards precision medicine prevention and therapy for cancer.


Data Analyst (MS-Level Position)

The data analyst will support imaging-related research. He/she will work collaboratively and will interface with faculty, research scientists, and trainees forming a diverse imaging and data science team. Responsibilities include collecting and organizing large datasets with clinical imaging data; applying, testing, validating and extending advanced image processing algorithms on medical images in a distributed cloud computing environment; collecting, organizing and verifying results; performing analyses using advanced machine learning methods. The data analyst will also perform quality control on results, and communicate with lab faculty, trainees, and clinical collaborators in preparation of publications. The position requires an M.Sc. degree, in computer science, statistics, biomedical engineering, mathematics or a related discipline with 1 to 2 years of hands-on experience conducting image analysis, bioinformatics, and/or statistical analysis research. Strong computational/programming skills (advanced knowledge of C/C++ and Python, version control, statistical analysis packages, experience in Linux/Unix platforms and shell scripting) is a must. Good organizational and communication skills are also essential. Experience with medical images and distributed cloud computing is a plus. This position offers the opportunity to gain valuable experience using advanced medical image processing techniques and to apply these methods in the study of emerging cancer therapies.

CBIG has been a dynamically growing group, including several research laboratories and many collaborators from diverse fields. Opportunities within CBIG exist in many existing and new projects in multi-modality imaging breast and lung cancer applications, including molecular imaging. Successful applicants will join a vibrant collaborative research environment and will work closely with clinical investigators. Collaborators include faculty in our Radiology department, the Center for Biomedical Image Computing and Analytics (CBICA), the Abramson Cancer Center (ACC), the Penn Institute for Biomedical Informatics (IBI), and the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (CCEB).
