The Swiss BioMotion Lab and the Imaging Department, at CHUV-UNIL, welcome applications from a high-caliber, hard- working prospective PhD student.
Expected start date: to be defined with the candidate (position available immediately)
Contract duration: 1 year, renewable until completion of the PhD
Activity rate: 100% (fully funded)

The PhD scholarship is available as part of a research project, supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), aiming at improving our understanding of knee osteoarthritis (OA), a painful and incapacitating disease affecting approximately a third of the population above 65 years old. As there is no treatment of proven efficacy to stop the progression of this disease, knee osteoarthritis represents a major socio-economical burden. In order to find new therapeutic options, there is a crucial need to improve the understanding of the pathophysiology of osteoarthritis. This project is part of a larger initiative. On one hand, it aims at developing new post-processing methods for the analysis of structural imaging data of the knee, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT). On the other hand, it aims at analyzing a unique dataset collected at CHUV-UNIL to model the relationships between structural and functional measures.
The successful candidate should:
• Hold a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Bioengineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or
• Have experience in medical image computing, preferably related to structural analysis of the musculoskeletal
system. Experience in 3D mesh models would be a plus.
• Have advanced knowledge in statistics or a keen interest in acquiring new statistical skills.
• Have excellent communication skills, prior publication of scientific work would be an asset.
• Be fluent in spoken and written English; French command is not mandatory.
