Retinal imaging such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) and Fundus photography, allows visualization of retinal anatomical changes due to vision threatening diseases such as age‐related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma. These images are routinely used to map anatomical abnormalities such as retinal thickening and thinning from intraretinal edema, which is done by segmenting and calculating the thickness of retinal anatomical layers.
Automatic assessment of specific regional changes in the presence of pathology is challenging and prone to error. Hence, there is a need for techniques that allow analysis of retinal abnormalities independently of layer segmentation, which could lead to discovery of data‐driven retinal imaging endpoints to assist with the assessment of the efficacy of ophthalmic therapeutics.
In this internship, we aim to implement and assess novel data‐driven approaches using modern image processing techniques, such as machine learning, to detect and identify retinal abnormalities independent of pre‐defined layer specific measurements.
