Title: Postdoctoral position – Physics-informed deep learning for cancer imaging, diagnosis and treatment (ERC Synergy project Zee-Zoom-Zap)
Closing date: June 30, 2026
Description:
Job summary
This position explores synergies between modern deep learning-based AI and classical mathematical formulations across scientific disciplines. It is part of Zee-Zoom-Zap, a new visionary ERC Synergy project aiming at the development of a novel paradigm for cancer theranostics (integrated diagnosis and treatment).
We are seeking a bright, proactive postdoctoral researcher to join the Zee-Zoom-Zap project team, taking a leading role in the exploration of novel physics-informed formulations for deep learning. With a focus on core methodological machine learning research, the work will also include applied research towards physics-informed imaging, image processing, device design, and therapy guidance.
Offer Description
This is an open-ended senior position in our group, linked to the ERC Synergy Zee-Zoom-Zap project (2026-2032). We offer a competitive salary, in line with the regulated scales of UPF.
A PhD degree in engineering, computing, physics, mathematics or related disciplines is required. Relevant experience in image processing and computational simulation for healthcare, and in particular physics-informed deep learning (notably neural operators) will be highly valued. The working language is English.
The position is available for immediate start. We are however open to later starting arrangements, to accommodate the candidate’s needs.
Host institution
The project will take place at the Department of Engineering of Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) in Barcelona, Spain. It will be carried out within the research unit BCN Medtech, with research interests in biomedical engineering, medical image analysis, and computer-assisted surgical planning, simulation and navigation.
The principal investigator of Zee-Zoom-Zap at UPF is ICREA Professor Miguel Angel Gonzalez Ballester, who will be the direct supervisor of this position.
