Research Assistant Professor in Biomedical Image Computing
The Grainger College of Engineering
Department of Bioengineering
University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

The Department of Bioengineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) invites applications for a full-time Research Assistant Professor in biomedical image computing. This area is broadly defined and includes research that involves computational imaging, image reconstruction, medical image analysis, and machine learning methods for advancing foundational biomedical imaging science. Biomedical image computing is an important strategic area for immediate research growth in the Department of Bioengineering. Additionally, the department recently launched a new M.S. degree in biomedical image computing that combines foundational medical image science with modern machine learning methods. The Department of Bioengineering is committed to creating an accessible, supportive environment and an educational experience that recognizes diversity and cultural competence as integral components of academic excellence.

The incumbent will carry out responsibilities related to research, teaching, and public service. The duties associated with the position are to establish a vigorous and externally funded research program related to biomedical image computing. The incumbent will also be expected to teach courses within the biomedical image computing M.S. degree program. Research track faculty are expected to provide professional leadership within the Department of Bioengineering, other campus units, and the professional community.

There is a strong heritage of outstanding biomedical imaging and computational science research at UIUC, and we are seeking applications from individuals who are eager to engage with this collaborative community. There have been significant recent investments in fundamental neuroimaging technologies, including a new human 7 T MRI system and ultra-high field animal MRI, as well as translational research on campus and with our clinical partners. The NIH P41-funded Center on Label-Free Imaging and Multiscale Biophotonics (CLIMB) has been recently established that provides outstanding opportunities related to computational microscopy research.

Our faculty engage in a variety of interdisciplinary projects facilitated by our research partners that include the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, two new NSF AI institutes, and many other research centers, clinical sites, and educational programs on our campus. A successful candidate is expected to possess a demonstrated track record of productivity and experience in computationally-oriented biomedical imaging research as demonstrated by publications, invited talks, extramural funding, professional service contributions, and other recognized scholarly activities. Minimum qualifications include a doctorate in bioengineering or relevant STEM disciplines and the ability to teach courses in the biomedical image computing M.S. program. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through research, teaching, and/or service.

This is a 100% non-tenure-track, renewable appointment on an academic year (nine-month) service basis paid over twelve months. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Preferred starting date is as soon as possible but is negotiable.

To ensure full consideration, applications must be received by November 30, 2023. Applicants may be interviewed before the closing date; however, no hiring decisions will be made until after that date. Applications should be submitted by visiting jobs.illinois.edu and uploading in a single PDF file in the CV/Resume section a cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching statement, a detailed statement of research interests, statement of service, diversity statement, and names/contact information for three references. The statement on diversity should address past and/or potential contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion through research, teaching, and/or service. Applicants may also submit supporting material relevant to evaluation of candidacy including representative teaching artifacts including syllabi, learning goals, and laboratory exercises. Questions about the application process should be referred to Amy Meharry at amym@illinois.edu.
