Description This 3-year PhD project focuses on the development of generative deep learning models in dental imaging. The primary aim of the project is to use state-of-the-art techniques to generate synthetic dental radiographs.
The project addresses a major limitation for most contemporary AI studies, especially deep learning studies involving imaging data, i.e. training data quantity and quality. For the majority of currently published studies, the sample size is highly limited; in addition, most studies are single-center due to ethical and practical complications related to patient data sharing between institutions.
A potential solution to this issue lies in the use of synthetic data using generative AI. As a concept, generative AI is highly interesting for clinical AI research, as it could help to overcome the abovementioned issues regarding data sampling by generating infinite sets of unique, realistic data that can be used for task-specific AI development. Within the current project, the focus is on generating different types of realistic dental radiographs, which would need a dedicated deep learning model built from scratch. The most relevant contemporary network types for this project are Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) and Latent Diffusion Models (LDM), most notably Stable Diffusion.
