Closing date May 31, 2026

Description The NIH Imaging Biomarkers and Computer-Aided Diagnosis Laboratory is world-renowned, with recent successes including public release of the NIH Chest X-Ray Dataset, the DeepLesion Dataset and the MRISegmenter Dataset. The lab has contributed impactful research to top-tier conferences and journals like MICCAI, CVPR, Radiology, and Radiology: Artificial Intelligence. We are seeking a Staff Scientist to support our research and clinical efforts on the application of artificial intelligence to medicine. The group’s focus is on image understanding, informatics, and computer-aided diagnosis. We develop algorithms using deep learning and large-scale robust statistical learning for tasks such as mining patterns from medical images and patient reports, semantically segmenting organ/pathology, co-registration of multiple modalities, feature extraction, classification, and volumetric visualization among others. We routinely utilize large language models and deploy the tools we build within the NIH ecosystem. The incumbent will work closely with a team of radiologists, medical students, computer scientists and engineers. Opportunities to

mentor post-doctoral fellows and other trainees are provided. In addition to performing collaborative research, the incumbent will interact closely with the PACS/RIS section and the clinical staff in Radiology and other NIH departments.

The ideal candidate should have a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical or Biomedical Engineering, Mathematics, Biophysics or Physics. The candidate should have outstanding research experiences or achievements in leading industrial/academic research labs or have completed a productive post-doctoral fellowship at a top-tier program. Applicants with a proven track record as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications on medical imaging applications of artificial intelligence/image understanding and having advanced mathematical and computer skills are encouraged to apply. Advanced skills in 2D/3D/4D image parsing, segmentation, and building robust computer-aided detection systems are sought. Demonstrated expertise in modern deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, and related tools is required. Experience working with current large language models (LLMs) and their ecosystems is considered a plus. Salary commensurate with experience. Applications should include a CV, brief statement of research interests, and three letters of reference.

This is a full-time Contractor appointment, with benefits conferred by the government contracting organization.
