Description Postdoctoral scholar positions are available at the University of Chicago. The selected candidates will report to Dr. Antonio R. Porras, PhD.
Dr. Porras’ team develops advanced medical image computing and artificial intelligence methods, along with clinical translation tools, to turn complex biomedical data into actionable insights for personalized patient care. We bridge the gap between technology and medicine by creating image-based computational solutions and bringing them from the lab to the bedside. Our work involves close collaboration with experts across diverse medical fields—including neurosurgery, radiology, pediatrics, craniofacial surgery, and oncology—covering the full spectrum of scientific endeavors, from innovation and technology development to clinical and translational research.
The recruited postdoctoral scholars will be responsible for the design and development of novel medical image computing and machine/deep learning methods to tackle important biomedical challenges. Their scope may include image segmentation, registration, disease screening/diagnosis, surgical planning, discovery of image-based biomarkers, anatomical modeling and/or predictive analysis. The selected candidates will have the opportunity to publish in top scientific journals, participate in top-tier conferences, and collaborate with other faculty, students and physicians to create solutions that improve real-world healthcare outcomes.
Our team is strongly committed to supporting the development of the candidates towards the next steps in their career. If you are passionate about both achieving technical breakthroughs and translating them into meaningful clinical applications, we would love to hear from you!
Responsibilities for the selected postdoctoral scholars include:
• Development of state-of-the-art medical image computing and machine learning methods to solve biomedical problems
• Writing and submitting manuscripts to scientific journals and conferences
• Scientific project management, coordination with other investigators, and/or supervision of research assistants and students
• Contribution to the coordination and growth of our research team
Candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications:
• PhD degree in computer science, engineering, biomedical informatics, computational biology, applied mathematics, applied physics, or any other field that provides the required knowledge, skills and ability for this position (candidates who are planning to obtain their terminal degree within three months of application to this position are also encouraged to apply)
• Track record of articles (published or accepted) as first/leading author in top scientific journals in the fields of medical image computing or computer vision, or equivalent peer-reviewed manuscripts published in the proceedings of top tier conferences including MICCAI, ISBI, EMBC or CVPR.
The following skills will be prioritized during candidate evaluation:
• Excellent scientific writing and oral communication skills
• Proactivity, ability to work independently and capacity to integrate in a multidisciplinary team
• Strong computational skills, advanced understanding of the mathematical foundations of deep neural networks, and practical experience creating new image computing algorithms and/or deep learning models designed for image analysis tasks
Compensation in the Biological Sciences Division follows the NIH NRSA Stipend scale. The pay range for this position is $62,232 - $75,564. Motivated candidates should submit their curriculum vitae, the contact information of two references and a cover letter indicating their motivation to join our team to Dr. Porras at antonio.porras@uchicago.edu.
