MICCAI Society Announces New President. Our Sincere Appreciation to Past President.

The MICCAI Society is pleased to announce that Marius George Linguraru, DPhil MA MSc, has been elected President of the MICCAI Society Board of Directors. Prof. Linguraru has been involved in the Society since he attended his first MICCAI conference in 2001. He was elected to the Board of Directors in 2021 and chairs the Career Development Working Group. Prof. Linguraru was instrumental in establishing the MICCAI Mentorship Program, the MICCAI Start-up Village and the AFRICAI Special Interest Group. He also served as the Program Chair of MICCAI 2024, which received and reviewed a record number of paper submissions. He will begin his three-year term as President on February 1, 2025.

“MICCAI has been a professional home for me throughout my career and I am deeply honored to have a chance to give back to the organization,” said Prof. Linguraru. “I believe the Society is poised not just to meet the challenges of the next few years, but to thrive as an essential leadership forum for the growth of medical image computing and computer assisted intervention.”

Biography

MGL PortraitMarius George Linguraru is the Connor Family Professor and Endowed Chair in Research and Innovation at Children's National Hospital in Washington, DC, USA, where he leads the AI research initiatives and serves as Principal Investigator in the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation. Linguraru is also Professor of Radiology and Pediatrics at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. He co-founded PediaMetrix Inc. and advises MGeneRx Inc., two companies focused on the well-being of children through AI solutions. He joined Children’s National Hospital from the National Institutes of Health, completed his doctorate at the University of Oxford, and held fellowships at the French National Institute for Research in Digital Science and Technology (INRIA) and Harvard University.

In addition to the MICCAI Society, Prof. Linguraru has served on boards and committees of the International Society of Medical Information Processing and Analysis (SIPAIM), the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, and the IEEE Signal Processing Society.

Our Sincere Appreciation to Caroline Essert, Past President

The MICCAI Society is immensely grateful to Caroline Essert, PhD, MSc, who completes her term as President on January 31, 2025. Prof. Essert joined the MICCAI Society Board of Directors in 2019, served as Co-Program Chair of MICCAI 2019, the General Chair of MICCAI 2021 and was elected President in 2022.

Caroline Essert2Under Prof. Essert’s leadership, the MICCAI Society successfully navigated the challenges of holding virtual conferences during a global pandemic, returned to in-person conferences with record participation and expanded year-round initiatives such as webinars, mentorship programs and endorsed events. Deeply committed to diversity, she worked with the Board to foster broader global engagement by doubling travel grants, supporting the first MICCAI conference in Africa, and reinforcing the MICCAI Code of Conduct. Three new Special Interest Groups were created reflecting the vibrant and dynamic nature of the MICCAI Society. She also worked to streamline organizational processes, solidifying MICCAI’s role as a global leader in our field.

“It has been an honor to contribute to the growth and vibrancy of this incredible community”, said Essert. “I extend my warmest welcome to Prof. Marius Linguraru as the incoming President of the MICCAI Board. I am confident that under his leadership, the MICCAI Society will reach new heights and continue to serve as a beacon of excellence in our field.”
