Abstract: Federated Learning (FL) is a decentralized approach that enables machine learning model training across distributed clients without sharing sensitive data, making it highly relevant for healthcare applications. This talk addresses several critical challenges in applying FL to medical image analysis, including data heterogeneity, class imbalance, domain shift, joining of new clients, absence of annotations, missing modalities in multimodal settings, and client-specific resource constraints. Solutions are proposed to mitigate these problems through adaptive loss functions, effective co-training of supervised and unsupervised models under non-IID data distributions, gradient alignment, knowledge distillation and methods for handling missing modalities in multimodal frameworks. Furthermore, the talk will explore client-specific parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT) techniques for large-scale multimodal models to make local training feasible under limited computational resources. Overall, the developed strategies aim to mitigate client drift arising from diverse data and resource conditions, thereby improving model alignment and aggregation in federated healthcare settings.
