WiM Award for Best AI Democratization Paper

We are delighted to announce the 2025 'WiM Award for Best Paper in AI Democratization' initiated by Women in MICCAI (WiM).
The WiM Best Paper Award in AI Democratization aims to recognize the paper that contributes to the broad scope of AI democratization. We invite authors of accepted papers of MICCAI 2025 and satellite events (workshops, challenges, CLINICCAI, Open Data) of MICCAI 2025 to submit . The top three winners will receive $500/$300/$200 and an award certificate and will be invited to give a talk at the WiM webinar to promote their works. Each applicant can submit multiple applications if the applicant has more than one paper.
Eligibility:
- The applicant is the author of an accepted paper of MICCAI 2025 and satellite events (workshops, challenges, CLINICCAI, Open Data) of MICCAI 2025.
- The applicant is a self-identified woman student or scientist.
- The paper contributes to the broad theme of democratizing AI, including but not limited to enhancing accessibility and inclusivity of AI tools in medical imaging and intervention, reducing barriers to entry for underrepresented communities in AI development and usage, and promoting open, transparent, and affordable AI solutions.
Criteria:
1. Advancing AI Accessibility
- Focuses on improving access to AI tools, data, or resources for broader or underserved user groups
- Demonstrates understanding of barriers that limit participation in AI development or usage
2. Impact on Inclusion and Open Participation
- Shows potential for significant positive effects on underserved or marginalized populations
- Provides evidence or a strong argument for how the research could improve health outcomes in these communities
3. Scientific Rigor and Innovation
- Employs robust and sound scientific methods and analyses
- Exhibits critical thinking and critical analytical skills to question the fundamental assumptions in current practice which may not be properly justified, and show comprehensive analysis of the limitations of the proposed work
- Demonstrates novel approaches or methodologies in addressing health equity issues
4. Practical Application and Implementation
- Offers practical, scalable solutions that enhance AI inclusivity, transparency, or openness
- Discusses the feasibility and potential barriers to implementing the research findings in real-world settings
5. Community Engagement and Collaboration
- Involves collaboration with diverse stakeholders, particularly those from affected communities.
- Demonstrates efforts to engage users, developers, or communities to co-create or guide the development and deployment of inclusive AI tools
How to Apply
Qualified applicants are encouraged to apply using the following details:
Application deadline: 11:50 pm AoE, July 31, 2025
Applicants need to provide a statement on how the paper contributes to the broad scope of health equity (maximum 1500 characters). A panel of anonymous judges will review and shortlist the best papers based on their research contribution to health equity. The top three winners will receive $500/$300/$200 and an award certificate.
