Abstract:
The authors propose an efficient and accurate whole brain segmentation framework that integrates curvature features—commonly used in surface-based pipelines but overlooked by deep learning methods—into neural networks. The method begins with a coarse segmentation of major tissue types (WM, GM, subcortical), followed by cortical surface reconstruction and vertex-wise curvature computation. These geometric features are then mapped back to the image space and combined with intensity information to train a refined cortical parcellation model. The framework is modular, compatible with any backbone network, and demonstrates improved accuracy on the Mindboggle-101 dataset without sacrificing speed.
