MICCAI Society and European Society of Digital and Integrative Pathology Announce Strategic Alliance to Advance Computational Pathology

The European Society of Digital and Integrative Pathology (ESDIP) and the Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention Society (MICCAI) officially announced a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the Opening Session of the MICCAI 2025 Conference, held in Daejeon, South Korea, from September 23–27, 2025.

This milestone partnership marks the beginning of a stronger relationship between the two international societies, aimed at fostering innovation at the intersection of pathology and medical image computing.

Why the Societies are Partnering

The new MoU establishes a framework to encourage constant scientific collaboration and exchange, expand partnerships, and create opportunities for joint initiatives that will benefit both communities. Areas of collaboration include:

  • Scientific collaboration and exchange – advancing research at the intersection of computational imaging and pathology.
  • Joint educational and research activities – including workshops, tutorials, challenges, webinars, and opinion publications, supporting the professional development of researchers and clinicians.
  • Cross-endorsement of events – The MICCAI Society and ESDIP will collaborate on special sessions, satellite events, and conference activities, bringing domain expertise, algorithms, and datasets to enrich both the annual MICCAI Conference and the European Congress on Digital Pathology (ECDP).
  • Resource sharing – providing expertise, data, pipelines, and tools to accelerate research and translation in computational pathology and medical imaging.

By combining ESDIP’s leadership in digital pathology with the MICCAI Society’s expertise in medical image computing, this alliance will stimulate innovation, strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration, and drive forward the development of technologies that enhance diagnosis, prognosis, and ultimately, patient care.

About ESDIP

The European Society of Digital and Integrative Pathology (ESDIP) is an international organization dedicated to advancing digital and integrative pathology through research, innovation, and education. Established in 2016 at the 13th European Congress on Digital Pathology (ECDP) in Berlin, ESDIP unites pathologists, researchers, clinicians, technicians, and industry experts to promote digital technologies, image analysis, and integrative diagnostic approaches that enhance patient care. The Society fosters collaboration and knowledge exchange through its annual flagship event, the ECDP, which has grown into a leading international forum. It brings together more than 1,000 participants, including pathologists, computer scientists, biologists, laboratory technicians, clinicians, and specialists from over 50 countries. This interdisciplinary nature supports the development of pathology’s integrative dimension as part of the Society’s mission, enabling fruitful translational collaborations across medical disciplines. The Society’s scientific activity includes the publication of white papers, recommendations, and guidelines that promote standardization of procedures and interoperability, further facilitating the adoption of digital and computational pathology within laboratories. These efforts are carried out in close collaboration with other leading societies in the field. In addition, the Society organizes synchronous and on-demand sessions to disseminate these initiatives, promote education, and raise awareness about the growing field of digital and integrative pathology. Its mission is to serve as a cornerstone in the complex journey toward streamlined and seamless implementation of automation and traceability in pathology workflows.
