The MICCAI Society Fellowship was started in 2009 to recognize the contributions of senior members to the MICCAI community. Initially, 12 Fellows were elected in 2009, with further fellows elected each year since. 

1. Eligibility for Fellowship:

a. Nominees should be senior researchers in the field who have made a substantial contribution to the MICCAI research field over a period of time, and are actively participating in the MICCAI community (including MICCAI conferences but this is not the only metric that may be used).

b. The nominee needs to be a member of the MICCAI Society at the time of election. (MICCAI Board members can be nominated, judged on equal scientific merit to non-Board nominees but cannot take part in the ratification process.)

2. Nominating and Electing Body: comprised of the current MICCAI Fellows

3. Nomination Process:

a. A Fellows Elections Officer, appointed by the Board, runs and oversees the process

b. The Fellows Elections Officer issues a call for nominations to all current Fellows

c. Each current Fellow may nominate a maximum of 1 candidate.

d. Each nomination must have a seconder who is also a Fellow.

e. Each Fellow can second maximum of 2 nominations.

f. Nomination is by electronic submission of a nomination materials/form to the Fellows Elections Officer

g. The nomination material typically includes a discussion of the nominee’s contribution the MICCAI field and community and a brief CV.

4. Confidentiality:

a. Because the MICCAI fellowship is highly prestigious and only very few of the highly worthy candidates will be elected, the nominee must have no input into or knowledge of the nomination.

b. Self-promotion and lobbying for nomination is unacceptable.

5. Selection Process:

a. All current Fellows will be invited to participate in the nomination and election process.

b. All nomination forms will be made available electronically to each Fellow.

c. A period of two weeks will be allowed for Fellows to discuss candidates by email.

d. Each Fellow will then select their top N (typically N=3) candidates, rank-order their choice, and email their selection to the Fellows Election officer.

e. Election Process:

i. The N candidates with the most votes are elected.

ii. If two or more candidates have equal votes for an electable place, rank–ordering will be used to break the tie. If the tie still exists, there is a second vote to decide between the candidates.

f. The Fellows recommendation will be ratified by the MICCAI Board. If a Board member is nominated for Fellow election, he/she is excluded from the ratification process, to avoid conflict of interest and to maintain confidentiality.

6. Approximate Schedule for the Fellow Election Process:

(The nominal MICCAI conference date is Oct 1. Schedule will be shifted according to the actual conference date.)
