What's Ahead for the MSB
Hello from the MICCAI Student Board!
We’re back to work for another year with the MICCAI student and young scientist community. Our team has grown quite a bit recently, so we’ve updated our leadership structure to include two Vice Presidents this year to help manage everything we have planned. Naren Akash is serving as President, joined by Cosmin Bercea as VP of Academic and Scientific Events and Bishal Swain as VP of Socials and Communications.
Learn, Share, and Grow
Our webinars officer, Weina Jin, has been working on a variety of sessions that address the practical side of being a researcher. We recently hosted a webinar specifically on how to write a successful paper for the MICCAI conference; if you missed it, you can watch the recording here.
We are also planning a panel discussion on career development. This session will focus on the transition into academia, including how to get started as a research professor and what to expect during the tenure process. Beyond these live events, we have a large archive of previous webinars and educational initiatives on our YouTube channel. These cover a wide range of topics, from technical tutorials to general PhD life tips, so feel free to browse and learn at your own pace.
Destination: MICCAI 2026
We are currently preparing for MICCAI 2026. We’re putting together a program that helps you balance the intense conference schedule with plenty of networking and experiencing the local culture.
Career Paths, Research, and Peer Support
Chanyoung Kim is organizing events focused on both academic and industry career paths. These will include dedicated networking sessions where you can talk one-on-one with professionals and peers about the future of the field and how to navigate your next career move.
We also have the EMERGE Workshop, which is a special initiative led by our scientific events officer, Gelei Xu. What makes EMERGE unique is that it is a workshop "by students, for students." It’s designed to support early-career researchers to become effective mentors as they move toward becoming independent investigators.
Spotlight on Your Doctoral Research
Our doctoral events officer, Nourhan Bayasi, is currently planning the second edition of the Doctoral Symposium. This year’s event will include research poster sessions and the return of the 3-Minute PhD Thesis Madness, where you can pitch your research to a wide audience in a fast-paced format. To see what the excitement was about last year, you can check out the highlights on our website here.
Share Your Knowledge: The Educational Challenge (MEC)
Nick Lemke is heading up this year’s Educational Competition. We’re looking for participants to create tutorials that explain complex concepts in medical image computing (MIC) or computer-assisted interventions (CAI). It’s a chance to build valuable resources for the community while competing for prizes. If you need some inspiration, you can find all the previous submissions in our MEC library.
Explore: Tours & Culture
Beyond the technical sessions, our social events officers, Sue Min Cho and Divyanshu Tak, are teaming up with our local student liaison officer, Shahad Hardan, to organize several tour options. Whether you want a full-day excursion to see the major landmarks or an evening tour focused on cultural immersion, these trips are a great way to take a break and get to know your fellow researchers in a relaxed setting.
Keep Moving: Sports and Morning Runs
To keep everyone energized, our sports officer Constantin Ulrich is planning sports activities and group morning runs. It’s a fun, low-pressure way to wake up, stay active, and meet other attendees before the daily sessions begin.
Our executive officer, Natalia Oviedo Acosta, is also working closely with the team to keep tabs on our logistics and budgeting to ensure everything runs smoothly.
