Ensuring a safe, welcoming environment
As a professional scientific society, MICCAI is committed to providing an atmosphere that fosters collaboration and encourages the free expression and exchange of ideas. That’s why the MICCAI Society has developed a Code of Conduct Policy to ensure participants in MICCAI activities can enjoy a safe, welcoming, dignified and inclusive environment, free from threatening conduct, harassment, bullying and intimidation.
As a participant of a MICCAI event, you agree to abide by this Code of Conduct. This agreement applies to, not only MICCAI Society events specifically, but also to interactions outside of MICCAI events such as evening dinners, social outings and informal conversations.
Participants who demonstrate acceptable professional behaviour will:
- exercise consideration and respect in their speech and interactions with others
- refrain from demeaning, discriminatory or harassing behaviour and speech
- be mindful of surroundings and of fellow participants.
Unacceptable behaviour includes inappropriate verbal comments such as those related to gender, gender identity and expression, physical appearance, race, age, religion. It also includes:
- deliberate intimidation, stalking or following
- sustained disruption of talks or other events
- unwelcome attention (sexual or otherwise)
- real or implied threat of professional, financial or physical harm
- physical assault
Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behaviours is also unacceptable behaviour.
Code of Conduct Officers
Any participant who feels harassed can and should, in all confidence and without fear of reprisal, personally report the facts directly to a MICCAI Code of Conduct Officer.
The MICCAI Society’s Diversity Working Group has installed four members to be Code of Conduct Officers at MICCAI 2023 as well as MICCAI events during the year. Our sincere thank you goes to Jun Chen, Pierre Jannin, Pallavi Tiwari and Ghada Zamzmi who have volunteered to be Code of Conduct Officers.
If you are either directly affected by or witness unacceptable behaviour at a MICCAI Society event, it is important for the safety of all participants that the incident be reported without delay to the MICCAI Code of Conduct Officers in person or by email at conductofficers@miccai.org.
Once a complaint has been received, the MICCAI Code of Conduct Officers will complete a thorough investigation. The Code of Conduct Officers will do everything they can to protect the privacy of the individuals involved and ensure that complainants and respondents are treated fairly and respectfully. Any corrective action will be proportional to the seriousness of the behaviour concerned.
It is our hope that participants attending MICCAI 2023 will continue to uphold the standards of a professional society and will enjoy a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment free from threatening conduct, harassment, bullying and intimidation.
