MICCAI 2025 Themed Special Sessions

Each MICCAI conference offers us an opportunity to explore challenges in medical imaging computing and computer assisted intervention from the unique perspective of its host region. This year, MICCAI 2025 invites us to explore these challenges through a Pan-Asian lens. As part of the program, we are proud to feature two special theme sessions that highlight emerging challenges and innovations, presented by leading local experts.

Theme: Pan-Asian Connection

MICCAI 2025 Special Session 1: Challenges and Opportunities of Medical AI in Asia

Session Chairs:
Jong Hyo Kim (Seoul National University) and James Gee (University of Pennsylvania)

Asia is home to more than half of the world's population, offering unparalleled opportunities for developing robust and generalizable healthcare AI models. The region is also witnessing a surge in collaborative research initiatives, making it a fertile ground for piloting innovative medical AI solutions.

This Highlight Session brings together leading experts from Korea, Japan, China, Singapore, Mongolia and Nepal, who will share their insights on the current landscape, unique challenges, and forward-looking perspective on AI integration in healthcare across Asia.

Join us to gain a deeper understanding of the diverse challenges faced and the transformative opportunities being explored in one of the most dynamic regions shaping the future of medical AI.

Theme: From Concept to Clinical

Special Session 2: How Government Funding Shapes the AI Ecosystem: The KHIDI Case from Concept to Clinical Translation
(Korea Health Industry Development Institute)

Session Chairs:
Kyu-Hwan Jung (Sungkyunkwan University) and Stephen Aylward (NVIDIA)

This session explores the critical role of government support in advancing AI-driven healthcare innovation, focusing on Korea’s Health Industry Development Institute (KHIDI) as a case study. Presenters will examine how targeted funding programs accelerate commercialization, enable clinical translation, and strengthen global competitiveness for AI companies. Topics include real-time ultrasound AI, stroke workflow optimization, and predictive diagnostic tools—all brought to market or scaled with KHIDI's support.

Join us for a comprehensive look at the collaborative ecosystem that transforms early-stage concepts into impactful clinical solutions.
